Between my full-time job and wedding planning, I’ve missed out on New York Fashion Week for the last year or so. I miss the chaos of being backstage and the front row celebrity sightings. But then I remind myself of the blisters from wearing uncomfortable heels all over the city. For the last few seasons, I’ve been enjoying watching my favorite shows from the comfort of my laptop. Plus, my email inbox is blowing up with the next best in beauty trends.
The nails at Jenny Packham spring/summer 2016 caught my eye. The collection boasted an earthy, ethereal vibe and to complement the look, Essie Global Lead Educator, Rita Remark, chose a bright standout blue to add an element of fun. Essie is one of my favorite nail brands. It’s affordable and I can always depend on the even application.
Here’s how you can get the look:
Apply a base coat to clean, filed nails
Next, apply two coats of butler please
Finish with a top coat
If bright blue nails don’t work for your 9-to-5, opt for a sheer, soft pink. Adore-a-ball by Essie is one of my favorites and perfect for the fall ball & gala season in Washington.
What’s September without New York Fashion Week? I’m heading to the city Friday morning to cover backstage beauty for Glitter Guide (my 2nd internet home) at some of my favorite shows (think Christian Siriano, Rebecca Taylor, Cushnie et Ochs, and more). This will be my 6th season (technically it should be my 7th but an inconvenient snow storm ruined my last trip). Never mind the not-so-fabulous parts like hustling between shows, scarfing down Fiber One bars and juggling my iPhone, camera and note book… there is something about Fashion Week in September that makes it all worth it.
Between early call times and late-night cocktail parties, my daily skin and makeup routine will be all over the place but here’s how I plan to survive with these fashion week beauty essentials:
An old post, but certainly not outdated. Did you know DKNY PR Girl was an intern at Washingtonian Magazine? [DKNY PR Girl]
My NYFW partner-in-crime and roomie, dished on her must-have September beauty buys and now I’ve got more products to add to my wish list. [So Much to Smile About]
I left New York Fashion Week with a serious craving to try some new hairstyles… but I wasn’t the only one. From classic powder play side parts to some crimping action, this slideshow pretty much covers it. [Refinery 29]
After reading Caitlin’s home office decorating post, I’m inspired to make some changes with my own space. (But first, I need to clean out my beauty closet.) [Style Within Reach]
I’m still unemployed, which means I’m on a serious shopping budget. Thankfully, I can shop cute (and affordable!) sweaters and skirts on this ultra cute style blog. [Poor Little It Girl]
Clockwise from Left: The final hair and makeup look at Nicholas K, the hair from behind backstage,a model getting ready backstage, and my own take on the spring/summer ‘do.
The Look: A sideswept messy knot at Nicholas K spring/summer show
The Inspiration: TIGI lead hairstylist Nick Irwin referenced the cult film, Soylent Green for inspiration. The look for Nicholas K can be described like this: “unkept, bohemian downtown kind of vibe,” he says. “It almost looks like you’ve just tied it in a knot and it’s falling out.” Irwin says this particular tip is key: “less is more.”
The Products: TIGI’s Sessions Series Sea Salt Spray and Sessions Series Finishing Hairspray.
The Tutorial:
Mist the sea salt spray to help manipulate and create a textured effect.
Gather hair into a low side ponytail and split pony in two and create a knot by looping in elastics.
Set the unkept style with Sessions Series Finishing Hairspray.
Where to? If you work in a conservative office environment, you may want to wait to rock this look on the weekends or a night on the town.
