Babe Coffee Body Scrub Review - Politics of PrettyI’ve been a little resistant to the organic skincare craze, but Babe, the whip-smart new Australian line straight from founder Kim Peirce’s kitchen table has me reconsidering. Featuring plant-based botanicals and organic ingredients, her line of body care products – body lotion, hand soap, body wash and scrubs – smell just as divine as they are effective. Energetic and positive encouragements (to name a few: “There’s not a hint of mediocrity in you” + “Love your own wild) are splashed across the bottles and the chic packaging freshens up your vanity. My favorite product, the Coffee Body Scrub, is dry – meaning the particles aren’t swimming in oils or liquid – and the caffeine from the sand-like ground coffee beans sloughs away dead skin cells and enhances skin tonality.

I was never a believer until I went on a yoga and meditation retreat in the California mountains with my sister. By day five, my NYC stresses felt manageable and even better, I felt capable of tackling them. Below are a few simple ways I incorporated meditation info my life at home.

Fall Edit: Wine-Stained Lips

As temperatures start to drop and iced coffees are swapped for piping hot cafecitos, the seasonal switch can also be applied to makeup. Shelve the summery reds and dusty pinks to make way for deep burgundys and velvety rich plums. My favorite newbies this season come from MAC’s brand new Liptensity collection – (L to R) Burnt Violet, Hellebore and Dionysus. The creamy formula has just the right amount of pigment and shine, allowing for buildable color (it can be as “hello, I’m here!” as you want). For day to day, I’m swapping my summer gloss for my old faithful standby, Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Passion, which is the best balance of subtle color and balmy moisture I’ve found.

What is Face Essence?

Lately, a new crop of beauty products has been popping up across the country. A longtime staple of the famous 10-step Korean skincare ritual, face essence is a relatively new phenomenon for Americans. If you aren’t quite clear on what it actually does, you aren’t alone. In a nutshell, essence is a water-based lotion packed with active ingredients to help your skin retain. You don’t really need it in the summer (your skin tends to be more oil-prone), but it’s a fantastic addition to a fall/winter skincare routine. The essence I’m including in my fall-to-winter skincare regimen is Jurlique’s Activating Water Essence. The product’s hero ingredient, marshmallow root extract, hydrates and softens skin while increasing the skin’s ability to absorb moisture, making all the products you use next more effective.

How to use: After cleansing, put a few drops of the essence onto your fingertips and rub together to warm. Then pat the essence onto your face, starting at your jawline and moving up.

Recent splurge: Yoga retreat to Ojai, California! The retreat was at this gorgeous little vineyard on the middle of a mountaintop with a burnt orange yoga room that looked out into the valley. It was life-changing!

What I love about beauty: I love the fact that it’s a cultural common denominator – everyone remembers their first serious skincare routine or swears by a certain lipstick when they want to knock their look out of the park
