I rarely wear my hair up in a ponytail, let alone an updo. I really do not want to wear an updo on my wedding day. I want Veronica Lake waves pinned to one side and a vintage pin (yes, I’m very specific at just one year out). But I’m aware of some of the common pros and cons to wearing your hair down. That said, if by chance I decide to do an updo, I would happily oblige to wearing a modern French twist. That dreamy, slightly disheveled, piecey look is equal parts sexy and chic and would go so well with my dress. This hairstyle really doesn’t require much product—just a bevy of pins depending on how thick your hair is. I’m very partial to Bumble and Bumble styling products like their Dryspun Finish for an airy look. Like what you see above? I’m sharing a simplified French twist tutorial over on Glitter Guide here.
In Hairstyles We Trust: Knots, Buns & Braids
If your tresses could talk, what would they say? Personally, my hair is probably bored with my minimal styling efforts and lack of color care. The good news is I have Pinterest to help bring my hair back to life. I swear, I could pin pretty hairstyles on Pinterest every single day. Here are three knots, braids and buns that caught my eye this week.
The Double Knot—I love cool, laid-back hairstyles and I’m determined to find a tutorial for this look. Judging by the name, I’m assuming you just double knot your hair but it looks a little bit more complicated.
The Loopy Bun—This a simple yet tried and true style that in my opinion, never goes out of style. This works for work, gym or weekend. No tutorial needed!
The Pomp-a-Braid—This photo looks like it was taken backstage at a previous fashion week but I’m on a mission to find what show and when. The Mohawk braid definitely adds a punk element to a classic romantic updo.
What do you think of these knots, braids and buns?

The Flyaway Top Knot at Phillip Lim + Tutorial
You know that messy top knot you’ve been sporting at the gym and on the weekends? Well, that’s the new beauty trend for spring 2015. Paul Hanlon, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Stylist for TRESemmé was the mastermind behind this hairstyle at the spring/summer Phillip Lim show. The ‘do was inspired by a cross between Stephen Klein’s 1990 photography and the romanticism of the Pre-Raphaelites, but with a punk edge. It’s a simple, organic and youthful look according to Hanlon. You would think this would be an easy tutorial considering how disheveled it looks but this tutorial is a bit more complex. Here’s how to get the look:
- Prep the hair by applying TRESemmé Climate Control Mousse through the hairline and mid-lengths to add volume and give it hold without soaking the hair.
- Rough dry with the TRESemmé Salon Professional Volume Blow Dryer and then use a soft bristle brush to pull out and straighten the hair around the hairline.
- Use TRESemmé Fresh Start Volumizing Dry Shampoo on the roots of the hair to create a matte and moldable texture and then moving around the hair line, comb back fine sections of the lengths and lightly spray with the TRESemmé Climate Control Finishing Spray to define and hold.
- Pull the hair into a ponytail at the crown of the head and secure with a hair tie. Divide the lengths into two sections and then knot (as you would your shoe laces), twice or three times depending on the length of the hair, secure with pins and leave the ends to stick out for a “punkier” look.
- Finally, pull out strands around the sides and back of the hairline and finish with a spritz of TRESemmé Climate Control Finishing Spray.
How do you feel about not taming your flyaways? Would you sport this hairstyle on the street?

Ponytails at Prabal Gurung + Tutorial
I’m sharing another favorite beauty look I spotted at Fashion Week. Ladies, take note: it’s all about embracing our hair’s natural texture, regardless of how you style it. Paul Hanlon, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Stylist for TRESemmé, created a look as if “she might have just stepped out of the gym.” Needless to say, I can get down with that. I rarely have time to polish my hair during the week and recently I received a few compliments when I wear my hair in a ponytail in the office. The Prabal Gurung spring/summer 2014 collection was inspired by strong, athletic and modern women and the structure of the ponytail is equal parts sporty and chic.
Here’s how you can get the look:
- Apply TRESemmé Extra Firm Control Mousse to the roots, section by section, ensuring full coverage by working upwards from the nape of the neck up to the parting.
- Comb through the wide tooth comb to create separation between the hair and run your fingers to accentuate the texture further. Leave mousse to dry naturally rather than use a hair dryer to give extra hold and layers to the look.
- Pull the hair back tightly from the sides of the head and down to create a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Secure tightly with an elastic.
- Smooth a small amount of TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Smoothing Crème Serum onto the tail of the ponytail and twist it into a loose knot. Blast with ahair dryer to achieve natural movement in the ends.

On Fashion Washington: Hair Repair Tips
With fall temperatures right around the corner (well, if we’re lucky), I figured it would be a good time to share some wise words of wisdom when it comes to hair care. Let’s talk about hair repair. If you recently realized your locks have been feeling noticeably drier or lacking shine and luminosity, then chances are you’re experiencing summer hair damage. The sun and heat can do that to your locks. Back in August, I took a trip to the drugstore to stock up on a bevy of hair products. One weekly hair repair treatment purchase later and my tresses has never felt smoother. Don’t let anyone tell you can’t repair damaged hair without a trip to the salon or breaking the bank… better yet, you can repair damaged hair for under $25 or less. From deep conditioning treatments to dual protectant sprays, I’m sharing my favorite hair repair products and tips over on Fashion Washington’s website.
