Every summer I go to battle with the DC region’s awful humidity. In the past, humidity always won. But over the last couple of summers, I’ve mastered a formula — by combining the right products and the right tools, in conjunction with a couple home remedies- to help manage my frizzy hair in humid weather.
Before I dive into the tips and tricks of mastering soft and smooth tresses, I need to clarify one thing. There is no such thing as eliminating frizz. I accepted that a long time ago. But there are ways to manage it. Emphasize manage. Here is how to manage frizzy hair in humid weather.
I’ve only ever used dry shampoo spray. Up until splurging on this Drybar Detox Whipped Dry Shampoo Foam, I’ve had an assortment of dry shampoo on my dresser. Collectively, they were all OK. Nothing fancy, but enough to be able to throw my hair in a messy ponytail.
I’m not sure why or even how this dry shampoo foam has only two stars on Sephora.com, but this is the closest I’ve come to finding a dry shampoo that refreshes my roots and gives me one more day of “clean” hair. Yes, air quotes, because my husband may beg to differ. According to him, hair is no longer clean after day one. He might be half right.
But back to why I love this product. My hairstylist says I have pretty dry hair so this powderless formula works well on drier scalps. It’s safe for color-treated hair and it smells great! It’s easy to apply—just shake, dispense into your palm and massage into your roots until the foam disappears.
Side note: my husband is super sensitive to perfumes and scents, so much so, I have to secretly spritz my perfume and hair products in another room before I run out the door for work. With this dry shampoo foam, I don’t have to worry about spritzing and dashing. The foam life is good, my friends.
For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been all about the top knot. Not a top knot fan? No worries. This week’s hair how-to is a messy low bun tutorial, an elegant alternative that still keeps the hair off your neck. I love that messy hairstyles are trending right now and I especially love that this can still look polished for those special occasions (just in time for wedding season!).
My trusty hairstylist and expert Anna Fazio has shared so many tips and tricks when it comes to DIY hairstyles. First, she created a gorgeous cotton candy top knot and then she taught me how to create a cute braided bun. Seriously, can I just keep her in my back pocket at all times? Now I understand why celebs never travel without their beauty entourage.
Here’s a quick break down of this messy low bun tutorial for you to try at home:
I’ve been attempting to put more of an effort into my hairstyle prep—one that isn’t too time consuming and doesn’t involve complicated steps or products. Balancing a full-time job and a blog doesn’t leave me much downtime to primp but I’m a firm believer that you can look polished without having to spend an absurd amount of time or money doing it. And if you’re a frequent reader of this blog, you know I’m all about beauty shortcuts!
Today I’m sharing another easy updo style: a braided top knot tutorial.
I hardly ever wear my hair up—except on a few occasions. If it’s a rainy day, then chances are I’m reaching for hairspray. If I haven’t washed my hair in a few days, putting it in a messy ponytail is an easy option. And if I don’t have enough time to flat iron or curl my hair, I attempt to hide my kinks in a twisted top knot. But more often than not, my casual updos resemble a sad little door knob on the top of my head, rather than an effortless coif.
As someone who only allots 45 minutes to get ready before work (including “snooze” time), it’s important for me to establish easy hair and makeup shortcuts where I can still pull off a polished look for my 9 to 5. Which is why I’m obsessed with this cotton candy bun. It exceeds my casual updo expectations and yet it’s so easy to pull off at home. Grab your bobby pins, ladies!
