Ask DCShopGirl: Eye Creams for 20-Somethings

Dear DCShopGirl,

What eye creams would you recommend for someone in their twenties? I’m looking for something to help with the prevention of wrinkles and reduce my bags.

-Eye Worry

As someone who’s always sampling new eye creams (there are so many on the market these days!), it’s important you purchase a product that works for you. Kudos for wanting to combat those under eye concerns early!

If you want to splurge on an eye cream (and I recommend this if you have many eye concerns), I love Philosophy’s Eye Hope ($49). It’s a light weight treatment that helps minimize fine lines, dark circles and puffiness as well as moisturizes and even helps brighten skin tone.

If you’re on a budget, opt for a drugstore buy like Neutrogena Ageless Intensive Deep Wrinkle Eye Cream (about $19) which is gentle on skin and won’t hurt your wallet.

Finally, my latest obsession, a treatment and concealer rolled into one is Perricone MD ‘No Concealer’ Concealer ($45). You can read an extended explanation of why I love this product here, but long-story-short, I love this product for it’s anti-aging formula, SPF 35 and its camoflaging ability to conceal dark circles instantly.

Ask DCShopGirl: Nail Salons in the Suburbs

Dear DCShopGirl,

Where’s a good place in the Bethesda and/or Rockville area to get a manicure? I hate going to places that give me the heebiegeebies!

-Nail Suburbanista

Hands down, Sandy Nails in Bethesda. Quick, clean and the best customer service. I rarely get manicures, mainly because I like doing my own, but Sandy Nails is my go-to for pedicures and waxing. Sanitary and clean!

If you venture out to Rockville more often than Bethesda, I’d recommend Acqua Nails in Rockville Town Center, so you can shop around after, but I’ll open this up to PoP readers for their recommendations…

Ask DCShopGirl: Pedi Please

Dear DCShopGirl,

Where’s the best place to get a pedicure without breaking the bank?

-Pedi Decisions

When I need a pedi, I head to Sandy Nails ($26, see Trang or Holly) in Bethesda. I’ve been going to Sandy Nails for years, mainly because the customer service is great, it’s a clean environment and they always have the latest season of nail laquers. Regardless of price, it’s important you go to a salon that uses new pedicure tools every time and their pedicure chairs are pipeless (meaning no room for bacteria or fungi to hide). Bottom line- treat your feet. It’s worth the splurge.

Ask DCShopGirl: No, We Don’t Want No Smudge…

Dear DCShopGirl,

How do keep mascara off my eye lids?

PS: I love your new blog!!! LIOB!! <3

-Lash Girl Problems

Ah, lash problems. I’ve always been told to apply mascara with my chin up, looking down and then wait five seconds before blinking. When I’m coating my lower lashes, I look up and I apply mascara holding the brush vertically. This helps me minimize any extra smudge.

If that doesn’t help, take a plastic spoon (I would avoid any soup spoons :) and hold it between your lid and lashes, while applying mascara. All the excess mascara should swipe on to the spoon instead of your lid.

Your question actually sparked a little bit product research which brings me to your another option. A mascara shield! I haven’t tried it so I can’t vouch for it but for a mere $10, it may be worth a swipe.

Happy lids sans mascara!
