For me, 2016 was the year of the lip. As I put together my favorite beauty products of 2016 I kept thinking of really great lip products that have not only taken over my vanity but my Louis Vuitton handbag as well. But I didn’t want my 2016 obsession to take over this list so I truly narrowed down my top makeup, hair, nail and skincare picks that I raved about earlier this year (or recently discovered) that I’m still using to this very day.

$4,000—that’s the amount the average woman will spend in her lifetime on mascara. If you’re a major beauty product junkie, that number probably doesn’t scare you but if you consider yourself to be pretty low-maintenance, then it’s best that you invest in a few tubes for every occasion. Personally, I never walk out the front door without a coat or two of mascara. On the weekends I like to keep things fuss-free and mascara keeps me looking awake and polished. From lengthy tubes to hourglass wands, I’ve rounded up my current mascara favorites.
This isn’t the first time I’ve reviewed Benefit They’re Real! Mascara and I constantly reach for this tube when I want to lift and separate lashes while lengthening (it’s like a push-up bra for your lashes). I highly recommend using it in conunction with Benefit’s little sister Tinted Lash Primer because it makes it easier to remove at night.
With each coat of Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, my lashes look more luscious and dramatic. The want can get a little clumpy so occasionally I’ll wipe the excess formula before I start applying. If you want more volume, this tube is perfect for date night.
The hourglass wand on Ciate London Wonderwand Intensely Volumizing Mascara really works wonders without clumping. One coat gives you carbon black lashes, two coats gives the illusion of wearing false lashes (perfect for weddings and special occasions).
I’m used to layering lash primers to enhance my eye look but this Pixi by Petra Lengthy Fiber Mascara has the opposite effect. Apply a coat on top of your favorite mascara and this will instantly give you longer, luscious lashes. I like to carry it with me when I travel if I need a quick touch-up or use it when I take my look from day to night.

I’ve been getting questions from readers on how I keep my skin in such good condition—even my photographer, Stacy Bauer, texted me the other day asking for eye cream recommendations. I love giving beauty advice so if you every have a question or need some product recommendations, feel free to connect with me on social media or email me at politicsofprettyblog[at]gmail.com. Today, I thought I’d share my favorite moisturizing skincare products. Whether it’s a cleanser or oil, there are plenty of ways to stay hydrated as long as you use the right products.
Simple Cleansing Micellar Water—I’m a huge fan of Simple cleansing products. I always travel with their facial cleansing cloths but this gentle cleansing micellar water is the most gentle remover I’ve used and easily removes my face and eye makeup at home—no rinsing required!
Clinique Pep-Start Eye Cream—I’m sure you’ve seen me talk about this on Instagram (if not, follow me on IG @politics_pretty for beauty tips and tricks) and I love using this in the morning to help wake me up during the week. It helps de-puff tired eyes and smooths the way for makeup.
Pixi Glow Tonic—Applying toner has not been a part of my skincare routine until I tried this. I’ve started using it morning and night between cleansing and moisturizing and I’ve noticed my skin tone even out while feeling clean and smooth. Most exfoliating toners I’ve tried have a slight stinging sensation but this application felt refreshing, probably thanks to its Aloe Vera ingredient.
e.l.f. Illuminating Eye Cream—This has helped me reduce the appearance of my dark circles. I usually find myself applying on the weekends so I can take a break from wearing makeup.
Jouer Daily Repair Treatment Oil—I’ve been applying a few drops at night and lightly patting on my skin to keep it moisturized throughout the night. I always wake up with a smooth, hydrated complexion.

This year I’m on a journey to test a new mask once a week in 2016. Whether it’s a moisturizing face mask or an exfoliating foot treatment, I’m going to report on what products are worth the splurge… or not. This week I decided to test-drive Pixi Glow Mud Mask, perfectly priced at $22 that you can scoop up at Target.
What it does: This is a clay mask made to stimulate, balance and purify. Apply a thin layer and leave on for 15 minutes.
What it felt like: The mask is a dark green color and it has a strong herbal scent. I waited about 20 minutes and I could feel my skin getting tighter—but not in an uncomfortable way. It was easy to rinse off afterwards too.
What I did while I masked: Cleaned my apartment and watched Keeping Up with the Kardashians. There was nothing else on TV, I swear!
The results: I didn’t mask last week so my skin hasn’t been in great condition. It’s been red, flaky and a little dry. It’s been a while since I tried a mud mask but lately I’m a huge fan of Pixi Beauty, especially their new Skin Treats line. My skin felt clean and smooth immediately after rinsing. I followed with my new favorite toner, Glow Tonic (more on that in a future post) and it helped boost my post-mask glow.

If you’ve got the winter blues like me, I highly recommend incorporating a pop of color in to your routine. Sapphire, teal and seafoam green keep popping up on my beauty vanity. From bright colored liner to mesmerizing shadow, I’ve rounded up seven beauty products (all under $50) that will cure your winter blues.
Did you see my feature on BuzzFeed last month? In addition to sharing my no-makeup selfie, I also showcased my favorite skin product right now. Tula Revitalizing Eye Cream is my go-to when I wake up and before I go to bed. I think what I love most about it is how smooth my under eye feels, creating the perfect base for applying makeup. I’m also a fan of their Hydrating Day & Night Cream. It really is a must for the dry winter season.
This Pixi Beauty Mesmerizing Mineral Palette in Aquamarine Dream has me completely infatuated with sapphire and aqua shades (plus, it’s only $12!). I may just have to try this on my next date night! If you’re not ready to dive in to blue eyeshadow but still want to experiment, try a thin line of Stila Smudge Sticks (waterproof eyeliner) in Turquoise and Mint Julep on your upper and lower lash line.
As much as I love wearing dark red and berry polish on my digits, Mark Mini Nail Lacquer in Teal Appeal (only $3.99!) has me daydreaming of my next tropical escape. Seriously, warm weather I miss you!
And when you’re ready to wash the city off your face… do it with Bliss Fabulous Makeup Melt gel-to-oil-cleanser (right now on sale on Sephora.com for $21). I experienced the weirdest sensation as I massaged this gel cleanser on my skin that eventually transformed into a lightweight cleansing oil.
