FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

When did you start blogging?

I started blogging when I was an assistant editor at Captiol File Magazine in DC. Working at a luxury lifestyle publication, I was exposed to high-end fashion and beauty trends and I really enjoyed testing beauty products for the magazine. PR reps would send me complimentary samples and my supposed “filing cabinet” ended up turning into a beauty closet. My co-workers would always ask me for product recommendations and that’s when I decided I should start a blog. In February of 2012, Politics of Pretty was born.

I signed up for a WordPress account and began documenting my favorite products and beauty looks. About a month or so later, I was unceremoniously laid off from my job with the magazine. The layoff was devastating at the time, but it allowed me to focus on my blog and reevaluate my career while I looked for a full-time job. I was unemployed for eight months and during those months I spent countless hours at my neighborhood Starbucks, writing, researching and reaching out to beauty PR reps to help build awareness. I eventually landed another full-time job in November 2012 but to date, my blog has evolved in to a source of revenue for me and if it wasn’t for those eight months I’m not sure I could say that today.

Where did you go to college and what did you major in?

I graduated from Towson University with a degree in Mass Communication, with a concentration in journalism and new media.

How do you make money on your site?

I make money through sponsored content and affiliate marketing links. It’s really important to me that I only feature products and brands that I love so when I am paid for a blog post, it will always be disclosed within the post. I work with several affiliate marketing programs. This means that if you click and/or make a purchase through certain links on my site or any of my social media platforms, I may make a commission from that click and/or purchase.

Is blogging your full time job?

Nope! I work full-time as a marketing manager for a B2B financial healthcare company. I feel extremely fulfilled in my career, both in my 9 to 5 and my blog. Balancing a full-time job, a blog and a husband, it’s not always easy and at some point, one always suffers but that’s what inspires the content you find on my site.

Do you accept guest posts?
